The Port of Caddo-Bossier Welcomes Midshipmen

Home >> News >> The Port of Caddo-Bossier Welcomes Midshipmen

The Port of Caddo-Bossier is pleased to welcome midshipmen Joseph Vitelli and Kevin Weis from the prestigious United States Merchant Marine Academy, in Kings Point, New York.  U.S. Graduates of Kings Point have a unique combination of credentials:

  • A highly-regarded Bachelor of Science degree
  • A U.S. Coast Guard license
  • An officer’s commission in the U.S. Armed Forces

For these reasons, Academy graduates are highly sought after as officers in the military and the merchant marine.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy has deep ties to our local Port. Captain Thomas F. Murphy, Commissioner and Past President of the Caddo-Bossier Parishes Port Commission, and Ted Knight, Port Operations Administrator, are graduates of the USMMA.

Midshipmen Vitelli and Weis join the Port as part of their curriculum which includes a two-week ashore with the opportunity to observe and participate in the management operations of a maritime, transportation or engineering related organization. Fortunately for the midshipmen, The Port of Caddo-Bossier, which is a multi-modal operation, provides all of these services.

The Port is excited to offer this opportunity to these accomplished, internationally-traveled midshipmen. They will gain invaluable experience from Port operations, and they will take with them an understanding and appreciation of Louisiana culture.
